More info... marriage and family therapy, individual consultation and coaching, pastoral psychotherapy, certified imago relationship therapist
I have been working with people in the context of their families, culture and social economic status for over 17 years. To do this I provide individual and family counseling, marital therapy and pre-marital counseling as well as divorce recovery in a safe, supportive enviroment. Common concerns you may experience include: depression, anxiety, difficulty sleeping (emotional issues), trouble adjusting to transitions such as aging, children as they reach adolescence, changes in relationships or work. If you are experiencing any of these issues, professional intervention is usually helpful. I have a great deal of experience with child development and parenting issues as well.
This book uses an approach called cognitive behavioral therapy that has been proven to help with depression. The title is Mind Over Mood: Changing how you feel by Changing how you think by Greenburg and Padesky. The title is self explanatory. Reading about doing this is much easier than actually changing long standing thought patterns but if you can master the techniques, it can be life altering. Often clients use the book in the course of therapy as it is easier |

More info... For yet another fictional book that touches on therapeutic themes, read Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel, The Namesake. It touches on two of the main tasks for adolescents, identity development and differentiation from parents, made all the more difficult by the main character’s struggle with his Indian immigrant parents. How does one form an identity when their live experience is fundamentally different than that of their parents? It also deals with the fine balance of what to keep of family tradition and what to leave behind and the struggle to find that balance.
Esther Perel has written a book on marriage with interesting ideas in addition to an interesting title. The book is Mating in Captivity and it challenges the idea of the sexless marriage. Dr. Perel offers reasons why a couple’s sexual relationship shifts after marriage and kids and offers solutions to remedy this issue. She examines cultural beliefs that support this problem in addition to a theory of how intimacy can squelch sexual desire. Worth reading if this is an issue in your marriage and even if its not.
This lesson demonstrates the skills involved in approaching another person to engage in an activity |

By John Trauth
So that day that you never thought would ever get here is getting here. Soon. You have dreamed about it. You play-acted it on your recent vacation. You saved for it. Maybe not enough, but hey, it's never enough, right?
But are you really ready to retire? If your financial advisor tells you that the money is sufficient, that's wonderful! But that alone does not make you ready. We call this the "King Midas" myth. You can certainly be excused if you believe it because we are all being battered with this myth by the financial services industry. I'm in this industry so I know of what I speak.
But if money were the answer, then why do 40% of retirees say they were happier when they were working? Retirement has not made 40% of them instantly poor. The problem is psychological. My friend and co-author, Alan Bernstein, is a psychotherapist and life coach in New York City with many clients who are rich but unhappy retirees in search of help.
