By Jerry L. Fobik

From the time we are children, getting filthy is something that is almost a pass time. Our parents try to keep us and our clothes from getting dirty in vain, because after washing our hands numerous times, we gather ourselves and go right away back to our mud piles. As we grow older, the passion of playing with dirt is often disappear and we live our lives with a renewed common sense of cleanliness. For some, however, a germ phobia prevents average life from happening. This germ phobia is also referred to as mysophobia and can be directly linked with a fear of dirt.

A germ phobia is not merely being fearful of germs it's a lot more. Mysophobia is the fear of filth that may contain germs or infect the person in some way with a contamination. The person with a germ phobia can often be noticed washing their hands again and again, in order to remove any germs they have come into contact with.

When the germ phobia was first recognized, it was wrongly linked with the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder need to wash the hands over and over again. OCD and germ phobia do demonstrate some of the same characteristics nevertheless they are separate in many senses, as well. The person who suffer from OCD feels a compulsion to wash their hands for the plain action of washing their hands. They might frequently be seen washing the hands for a certain amount of seconds or a few times per day. A person who suffers from germ phobia, on the other hand, will be washing their hands in order of removing the filth, both visible and not visible.

A germ phobia can be more harboring to every day life than many other forms of phobia due to the fact that germs are invisible. The perceived germ in germ phobia can be picked up from anywhere and everywhere and thus the feared germ is all around the person who suffers from this anxiety. With the arrival of germicidal gels, the person who suffers from this anxiety can often be observed making use of one of the many anti-bacterial gels on a regular basis. The germ phobia sufferers will often carry bottles in their purses, pockets, cars and all over their homes.

A person with mysophobia may avoid public bathrooms, public restaurants and even the homes of acquaintances for fear that they will come in contact with microbes in the air. They will clean their homes from top to bottom every day and will sterilize every part of the home almost religiously due to this germ phobia.

The absurd nature of the mysophobia will cause the person with the germ phobia to change the normal cycle of life around the need to remove microbes from their surroundings at all times. The treatment for germ phobia includes therapy sessions and medications. With the suitable treatment, the mysophobia can be removed and the person can go about living life free from the intense fear of germs.
